In the latest ChinaGRTAE Expo 2012, our journalist got the honor to have an interview with Mr. Turo Tapio Tiililä, President of Test World Oy. He is very nice and explained us something about tire testing and also the meaning of tire testing.

1.As we know, Test World is a company specializd in tyre testing, your main business is outdoor tyre testing. Would you please tell the purpose or exactly the advantages of outdoor tyre testing?
Thanks for your question. As we know, we can get theoretical numbers by indoor testing, but these cannot show us the feature and strengths or weakness directly as driver can experience on real road. By doing outdoor tyre testing, we can compare all kinds of tyres in certain conditions. In this way, tyre producers can find advantages and disadvantages of their own products and make improvement accordingly.
2.As I know the yearly tyre output in Guangrao is one hundred and fifty million sets. I think many tyre producers here in Guangrao are very interested in outdoor tyre testing by your company. Are there any challenges or difficulties to perform outdoor tyre testing?
There are many, to name a few:(1) the limit of location;(2) the climate conditons;(3) the testing equipment;(4) competence of test drivers;(5) methodology of testing data analysis.
3.Just now we mentioned some challenges and difficulties by outdoor tyre testing. So can you explain your advantage in outdoor tyre testing compare with other agencies or companies?
We have the northernmost tyre testing place in the world, which is located in Ivalo, 300km north of Arctic circle, Ivalo has a long winter, which is good for winter testing.We have the most advanced testing equipments,decades of testing experience and many experienced experts, which helps to decrease the influence of occasional factorsand a complete analyzing method and we can do tailored tyre testing according to customers’ demands.Test World is in cooperation with many professional auto media in Europe and in China. We provide authoritative and fair winter and summer tyre testing reports and these reports are published by leading auto magazine in 8 counties. This has opened a window for Chinese companies to the world and provided them a platform to fair competition.
4.You do tyre testing in summer and winter. But tyre producers develop new tyres all year around. What if tyre producers want to test a new model at any time of the season?
We are cooperating with other proving grounds all over the world, in this way we can do tyre testing all year around. In May 2012, Test World has started to build the first year-round indoor winter test centre in the world. In this centre, we will be able to provide all the test conditions the automotive industry requires year-round. This will remove one of the biggest bottlenecks in the development of vehicles: winter test dependence on the season and prevailing weather. The test centre will open to customer this winter.
5.China is big with huge climate difference across the country. China’s automotive market develops very fast, but most of the Chinese drivers know little about the vehicle they drive, no matter to say the difference between summer tyre and winter tyre. Is winter tyre a must only in countries with long and cold winter like Nordic countries? Does winter tyre have direct and huge influence on road safety?
First of all I want to point out that Nordic countries are not the only market for winter tyres. USA, Canada, Russia, most EU countries will also have to use winter tyres when season comes. Of course the northern China is not an exception. Scientific research has proven that rubber compound will change its behavior when temperature is below 7 degree Celsius, which then will have direct impact on road safety. Therefore experts recommend that drivers shall use winter tyre whenever the temperature is below 7 degree Celsius. Germany is a country which pays great attention on road safety. Their government has introduced a new law to ask all drivers to use winter tyres in the whole winter season starting from November until March next year.There was a heavy snow some years ago which affected most Chinese people on their way back to home for Spring Festival. If more and more Chinese drivers can realize the safety and comfort which winter tyre can bring, then more and more people will choose winter tyre in winter season, which will mean more business opportunity for many Chinese tyre producers.
